Energy performance certificates are documents which detail the current energy performance ratings of your bills in addition to the potential energy rating that a building or property could be with a few changes. An energy performance certificate will show how energy efficient a building is with a rating from A to G, which A being the most efficient and G being the least efficient energy rating. It will detail how much gas and energy bills will cost in addition to an estimate of the carbon dioxide emissions that will be released.
On the other side of the certificate, there is also another A-G rating with A being the most efficient again and G being the least efficient. This is the energy rating that the building could potentially be if some changes are made such as double-glazed windows and energy saving light bulbs. Energy performance certificates will have these two letters in two separate, clear columns with different colours to differentiate which is which. For example, the current energy rating could be graded as a D and the potential rating could be classed as a B. The potential rating will detail exactly what work needs to be done to achieve that new rating.
To give further detail on your energy rating, the letters are also numbered. The categories are as follows:
Your grade will correspond to the colour of each letter (dark green being A and dark red being G with the colour changing in-between), there will then be a number placed within the coloured cell to show how close the building is to the next energy efficiency rating. This can help you push to the next rating if you are close to it.
Once energy performance certificates are issued on a building, they are valid for 10 years.
